Line 5
For those that are unaware, Enbridge line 5 is a 64 year old pipeline that is buried in the Straits of Mackinac, in Lake Michigan. The pipeline was supposed to last 50 years and is way past its retirement time. Line 5 is a 645 mile, 30 inch in diameter pipeline. As it travels under the Straits of Mackinac, it splits into 2 20 inch in diameter parallel pipelines that are buried under the Straits, west of the Mackinac Bridge for 4.5 miles. It carries 540,000 barrels of light crude oil and natural gas liquids per day, equaling about 22.6 million gallons per day. Governor Snyder and Attorney General Schuette could end the risk that Enbridge poses to the Great Lakes with 1 signature! They are not fulfilling the requirements of their job, as part of the Michigan Constitution is to protect the Great Lakes. An Enbridge oil spill could decimate our Great Lakes.
In June, the state of Michigan released a draft report on alternatives to line 5. The report was created by Dynamic Risk assessments of Canada. Enbridge put up money for the study on the agreement that it can review the final report a week before it was released to the public. The State paid for the Dynamic Risk with Enbridge funds out of an escrow account to maintain NON-BIASED results. The study was paid by Enbridge for Enbridge and they got to analyze it first!
The companion risk analysis that was to estimate the cost of the worst case oil spill cleanup was scrapped when it was discovered one of the contractors was also doing similar work for Enbridge, thereby violating the conflict of interest clause.
Due to public uproar over the Enbridge shenanigans, a judge has ordered that Enbridge hold Pipeline Safety Advisory meetings throughout the state. During one of these meetings, it was noted that the outer coating layer has failed in places, and the company doesn’t usually repair that kind of protection system. It was covered in the meeting that the anti corrosion protections on Line 5 were working as designed, but there were 18 places where there is coating delamination. Enbridge calls these coating issues “holidays”.
People from all of the state attend these meetings by the busloads to say that Line 5 should be shut down https://youtu.be/D2FNQ17ToFk
Enbridge brought us the 2010 Kalamazoo River oil spill, where more than 100 million gallons of tar sands oil spilled into the Kalamazoo River. It took approx. 17 hours for the line to be shut down. The spill took years and more than a billion dollars to clean up due to the hazards of pumping heavy tar sands oil through it. Enbridge was required to pay over $177 million settlement to address the Clear Water Act violations, clean-up cost, and oil spill prevention safeguards. As Enbridge does it own monitoring and oil spill cleanup, these spills become profitable. The $177 million is just a small amount to this oil king.
Line 5 ends in Sarnia, Ontario. The report does not say how much of the oil in Line 5 is actually used in the state of Michigan, although it does estimate removing the line altogether without a replacement could cause cost of gasoline at the pump in Michigan to rise very slightly.
Oil and Water Don’t Mix has been collecting resolutions from cities, townships, counties, businesses, tribal governments in an effort to let the Governor and AG know that the people of Michigan are calling for Enbridge Line 5 to be shut down. To this date, Michigan government is not listening to the people that elected them into office. Tribal governments have treaties that require the Great Lakes to be protected to continue the tribes’ way of life and treaty rights.
It is easy to get your city/county added to the list. Just ask and provide the sample resolution. It has been that easy. When the resolution has been passed, send it to the website and get it posted. Our government needs to listen to the people.

We need to contact the House Representatives and get them to make a stand in support of Resolution 51. This resolution is to urge the Governor and Attorney General to exercise their authority as guardians of the public trust. They must terminate the 1953 easement and shut down the Enbridge Energy line 5 pipelines on the bottomlands of the Straits of Mackinac. It was sponsored by Yousef Rabhi, Robert Wittenberg, Jon Hoadley, Abdullad Hammoud, William sowerby, Cara Clemente, Jim Ellison, Peter Lucido, Kevin Hertel, Kristy Pagan, Sherry Gay-Dagnogo, Terry Sabo, Stephanie Chang, Sheldon Neeley, Fred Durhal, Sylvia Santana, Tom Cochran, Erica Geiss, Jewell Jones, Leslie Love. We need to contact our Senators and ask them to support Bill 880
This bill is sponsored by Senator Rick Jones, Steven Bieda, Mary Knollenberg, David Knezek, Morris Hood III, Tonya Schuitmaker; proving this is a bi-partisan issue. We need to contact our Senators and ask them to support Bill 881 and to SHUT DOWN LINE 5!!!
It is calling for bottlands easement for pipelines, provide for risk analysis and possible termination and to prohibit new grants of Amends 1994 PA 451 (http://www.legislature.mi.gov/(S(um0vywd5rtopiuj31g3o4o1c))/mileg.aspx?page=getObject&objectname=mcl-act-451-of-1994)
Please attend the National Protest, rally and flotilla at the Straits of Mackinac. We need to bring awareness to the danger buried in our beautiful Great Lakes. If you are unable to attend, please host a solidarity event in your area in support! We are stronger together.
We have so much to lose WHEN the oil spill happens. The Great Lakes supply 6 quadrillion gallons of fresh water, which is one-fifth of the world’s fresh surface water or 84% of North America’s freshwater.
